Have you ever had one of those student-teacher debates you couldn’t win without finding yourself in trouble? One of those arguments where you knew you were right, but you couldn’t push your luck? I haven’t myself, but I know of one such victim. A young girl at fourteen years of age with an even younger spirit found herself in such a situation. Viviana Jennings, the most curious and creative soul you may ever meet, sat teary-eyed in class as she waited for the lunch bell to ring. As soon as it did, she burst out of the room and set out to find a safe haven- the broom cupboard inside the old school gym. Abigael Barton was not far behind her.
“Whoa!” Kait Germain exclaimed, sticking a hand out to stop Abigael from running into her a few moments later. “Gael, why are you running?”
“Viviana,” Gael breathed, “she ran off.” Once Abigael had caught her breath, she added in a slightly patronizing tone, “She got into an argument with Mr. Keller over universes. It was silly. She claimed they existed and he said she was talking nonsense. At the end of it she looked ready to cry. We need to go look for her, or she’ll be hiding during all of lunch.”
“Viviana’s hiding again?,” a new voice queried. Nattie Moury came from behind Kait and rested an arm on her shoulder. “I’ll help find her."
Meanwhile, Viviana had run straight to the old gym and was not opening the door of the broom cupboard. She stepped inside and hoped no one would find her. “Everyone can just leave me alone!,” she avowed, although she was the only one to hear it, of course.
Viviana began to walk backwards, and nearly tripped over a broom that had fallen to the floor. She kept moving back into the broom closet until she thought she could not go in further. She stuck a hand out behind her to find the wall- She could not yet reach it. “This is an awfully large broom closet!” Viviana whispered, and kept trudging backward.
She kept moving for what felt like ages until something strange and leafy touched her hand. She jerked it back and whirled around. “What the-!”
Abigael led her friends in the direction dear Viv had run, heeding occasional tips from Nattie, who was usually the one who tracked their friend down when she got upset. “Down this hallway- No, this one, Abigael! See how there’s less people here? Viviana always isolates herself.”
Although this was indeed the hallway Viviana had turned down, they hustled right back the doors to the old gym- Except for Nattie, of course, who called back over to them.
“But no one’s used that gym in ages! It’s completely empty!,” Abigael argued, trying to sound smart as always. When she saw the sarcastic look on Nattie’s face, she realized what she had just said. “Oh...So she’d probably hide in there.”
The three girls opened the door to the empty gym and wrinkled their noses. It smelled like wet dogs. Paint was peeling off the old walls and the dirty floor was missing bits of its tiles. “How horrible!,” Abigael groaned, “Do you really think she’d be in here?” Kait and Nattie both ignored her, having spotted the the door to the broom closet at the same moment. They both ran (and Abigael followed reluctantly) across the gym, and Kait grabbed the doorknob carefully, not wishing for the peeling gold paint to come off in her hands. “Nattie, she listens to you best. Want to go in first?” Nattie nodded.
She stepped into the dusty broom closet and gave a cough. She had walked a little ways- that’s a long ways when you’re talking about a broom closet- before Kait and Abigael grew tired of waiting and went in after her.
“Guys!” Nattie hollered from what seemed to be a place so distant Kait froze in place. How big was this closet? “I don’t see her, but I can’t even see the end of the closet!” When Abigael suggested to Kait that they turn back, Kait demurred. “The closet continues, and so will we. Come on!”
A few moments later Kait called Nattie’s name and asked where she was. She got no response. “Perhaps she’s found Viviana,” Abigael proposed. The two girls moved faster now, and Kait began to run when she saw a light ahead. “What’s that?,” she wondered aloud. Abigael jogged to keep up with her.
Having found the source of the light, Kait stopped. Her mouth fell open. “What is-” Abigael began before halting behind Kait. Both girls slowly stepped out of the broom closet and stood next to Viviana and Nattie. The four girls stared above and around them in awe, for the dank and dusty broom closet had now turned into a beautiful forest with tall trees that glinted in the sunlight and cool breezes that trickled through their hair.
Viviana, with a smile on her face, stepped in front of her friends, whose mouths were still gaping. “Looks like Mr. Keller was wrong,” she jested, her blue eyes sparkling.
