Chapter Two- Exploration
"How in the-" Abigael began, "What is this?" She felt as if her factual brain would explode. Kait managed to stutter, "How on earth is this possible?" Although she was shocked and very confused, Kait looked around and took in the colors and sunshine and coolness of the forest. Suddenly, she felt herself smiling.
Nattie did the same, and with a grin on her face, she announced, "This is amazing! We've got to find out where we are!"
"Perhaps we could ask one of the teachers about it!" Abigael requested excitedly, sure she had found a way to understand what was going on.
Viviana frowned."No way! This is our adventure! We've got to explore and find out where we are." Viviana twirled in place. "This place feels magical, and not at all like earth!"
This was too much for Abigael. "Viv, we are on earth! This is probably just some elaborate set for a school play or-or something," Abigael tried to come up with a logical explanation. "You're being silly! We can't have entered another world by stumbling through a broom closet!"
"Stop!" Kait ordered. "None of our questions will be answered if we just stand around here arguing. Let's take a vote."
The others nodded. Kait always seemed to know what to do, as she was a natural-born leader. Kait gave two options; exploring or going back. When three of the girls voted to explore, Abigael stated in a defeated voice, "You know what, we might as well. Lead the way, Kait."
Do not let me deceive you; Abigael was a nice, smart girl and a good friend who would never wish to be a burden. However, her preference for thinking logically and only logically took away from her imagination.
And so, Abigael did not pout or grumble as the girls began to travel through the woods, but remained quite pleasant and observant. She was, after all, only confused by the situation.
The girls began their wondrous journey of exploration, and grew more and more amazed every second. This beautiful forest was no man-made structure stuffed in the back of a closet. This was a very real forest, and much too large to fit in a closet.
The sky was bluer than any painted set and in it hung a very real sun. Very real sun rays illuminated their hair and eyes and faces. A lovely breeze- impossible to duplicate in a broom closet- followed the girls everywhere and cooled their necks and faces.
"Oh!" Viviana cried, "Do you hear that? That sound?" Nattie answered in a curious voice, "Yes, I do! It seems to be coming from that direction," she pointed ahead of them and to the right. "It sounds just like a, a-"
Before Nattie could finish, Viviana took off in the direction of the sound. The other girls called her name and ran after her. Nattie, a powerful runner, was the first to reach Viviana, who now stood with a large grin on her face. Nattie gasped, "I knew it was a waterfall!"
Kait and Abigael soon joined them, and everyone stood in awe for a moment. Gallons of sparkling blue water fell from a cliff about fifteen feet high. The cascading water fell into a river that flowed to their right.
Suddenly, Viviana broke into a run and jumped into the river. Exchanging grins, Kait and Nattie began to sprint, racing each other to the river (Nattie just barely won.) Abigael ran behind them and upon jumping in the river, splashed Viviana, who let out a squeal of delight.
The four friends were now wading up to their knees in the gorgeous water. They splashed and laughed and yelled all they wanted. Soon the four grew tired and stumbled out of the water and onto the grass. There they sat together and let the sun dry their legs.
"Oh!" Abigael suddenly remarked, "Do you suppose lunchtime is over?" Kait rubbed her belly. "Maybe so. Too bad, because I'm just starting to get hungry." Abigael jumped to her feet. "But that would mean our next class is starting! We'll be late!"
"We probably already are!" Kait agreed, "Let's hurry and find our way back!" Although all four friends sprang to their feet and started to run back into the forest, Viviana expressed her sorrows along the way. "I don't want to go back! The adventure is only just beginning!" Nattie comforted her, "Don't worry, we'll return as soon as we can!"
But for one to return to a place, one must leave it first. When the girls returned to the spot from which they had arrived ("I swear this was it!," Abigael had promised,) they could not find the broom closet for the life of them. They found no opening to the dark and dank room, only extensive wood in its place. No closet, only trees.
"Don't panic," Kait reassured her friends. Everyone had stunned looks on their faces. "Perhaps this is not where we came from after all." When Abigael argued that she had memorized the appearance of the vines growing on the trees and that the tall trunks around them matched those exactly, Viviana cut in.
"Why don't we just quit worrying about how to leave this place and enjoy being in it? Think- We've just discovered a world within a broom closet! The others nodded in agreement and Viviana smiled. "Good. Would you like to lead the way, Kait?"
Kait grinned, suddenly understanding the beauty of the situation. They were free to explore a whole new world- What an adventure! "Yes. I would love to, actually. Let's go!"
And now Kait, Nattie, Abigael, and Viviana set out in this new and spectacular world. The girls walked through shining forests, walked across gorges, marveled at waterfalls, and gazed from up high on cliffs. Every time they came upon such a cliff, the friends would gasp, for it had become obvious that this was not just a wood outside the school, which Nattie had once suggested. Even Abigael was nearly convinced that they were no longer on earth.
After picking several blackberries from the bushes along the way and declaring them to be 'dinner' (They had done the same for lunch), the girls noticed that the blue sky had turned a darker shade, and that the air was now cooler.
"We must find shelter," Abigael reminded them. "Oh, but I suppose the best we could possibly do is create a fort with sticks."
"Like a teepee sort of thing?" Viviana remarked with a giggle.
"That's alright. It doesn't seem as though it may rain. Perhaps all we need is level ground to sleep on. Anyone remember seeing such a place?," Kait asked hopefully. No one had, but after a couple of minutes' walk Nattie cried, "Here! How is this?" The girls circled the large clearing. "Look, there's a river right here! We'll have water. And there's raspberry bushes all around," Abigael pointed to and fro. "Good work, Nattie!"
And so, the girls laid down on the soft grass in the middle of the clearing. "Kait, your pillow is a joke," Nattie chortled as Kait tried to scrunch the vest she had been wearing into something that would support her head. She soon gave up and all four friends were laying on the ground with slight discomfort.
They ignored their annoyances, however, when they realized how tired they were and how badly they needed rest. Soon every last girl had fallen into a pleasant slumber underneath the shining stars that were different than those that hung in the sky above earth.
